Fresh cream from their own cows, and churned in a little table top churn that held about a gallon. We used to take turns cranking the handle because it seemed like it took forever to start forming curds. It wasn't that pale color you see now either, it was a rich deep yellow. After my aunt poured off the buttermilk, it was rinsed and patted into shape in a bowl. If it was a hot day, when it melted, you didn't see that watery stuff sitting underneath either, it just became liquid. The kitchen was always hot, winter or summer, because she cooked on a wood burning stove. Some of my best summer days were spent there. This is me, my sister, and the boy cousins.... little gang of gypsies!! Note the classy macaroni necklaces....I'm the short kid going back outside before it gets too hot to breathe.... later Sheila |
