Bulbs: Will these saffron crocusses come back?, 0 by shimer

The foliage has been out for almost 3 months. A week or two ago, I noticed what appears to be damage from browsing of some sort, and today more of the foliage looks like something got to it.
Here's a picture of the foliage that looks like it's been cropped just a couple inches above the ground.

Is there a possibility that it's just breaking off as it ages? Did the plants get enough time to feed before this happened or should I brace myself for a poor showing next fall? Is there anything I can do to protect what hasn't been touched yet? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
