Your plants that you ripped out look like what I am growing and they ARE Trees.
Morning Glory Tree Ipomoea Carnea ssp. fistulosa 'Pale Pink'.
My plant last year grew to 16'. This year they are already over 12' and growing.
I do love mine, but have them planted in a group all by themselves.
Definitely not good under your eaves.
