If these are the boxed type as you mentioned, you might want to start them in gallon pots and keep them indoors in a sunny exposure until you can plant them safely outside. Clematis can suffer from clematis wilt, so when you plant them outdoors be sure to plant the crown about two inches under the soil. If they get hit with the wilt, the plant will usually still survive as long as the crown is not affected.
