When we took over the souterranean flat below ours, the smell was so ghastly that I had to run back out and have another look at my breakfast. The place was a complete dump, and we started right away to rip everything out.

We thought for years that the house was subsiding as it was built in 1905, and our whole area is built on moorland, but to our horror, we found that the people before us had knocked a doorway in a carrying wall, which of course weakened the entire house structure causing cracks in the wall up to the third floor.
That was the first repair, and 3 months later, we were finished with a knock-through to our flat upstairs, thus giving us 7 rooms in all .... a house in a house if you like.
