Not very far from Charlottesville, it was the summer home of James Dooley, who built his Maymont estate in Richmond in the early 20th century. Maymont is now a fine city park with an outstanding arboretum collection, while Swannanoa is in private hands, resting and waiting for a thoughtful rehabilitation.
