The "filter" part is the gravel, plants, roots, etc. (of the veggie bog) that the water passes over. It catches a lot of mulm and the plants suck up the nutrients that the algea thrives on. I've read repeatedly that a veggie bog should be at least 1/10 of the pond in surface size in order for it to work. When I had my small pond I had a small, raised veggie bog about the size of a half barrell. It was full of hyacinths. They bloomed profusely and kept the water clean. That's gone now but I'll see if I can find a picture. I have a bigger pond now and the veggie bog is 1/4 the size of the pond. It works great! It's filled with pea gravel and heavily planted. I am attaching a picture of it. It's kind of hard to see because it's surrounded by plants. This was taken earlier in the season so the bog plants are still very small. Now the whole thing is covered. This is the only filteration that I have on the pond, I also have a skimmer and my water is crystal clear. |
