This is a mantis egg-cluster (ootheca) with California Mantises hatching from it. They descend on silken strings.

Not sure how well these see color, but it sure stands out on this Caesalpinia plant... was missing a few days later.. .maybe a bird noticed the color contrast...

Typical preying mantis sex... female has eaten male's head off, but still going at it. Later he walked off and survived 12 hours more.
