This is Europe's largest moth and, having a wingspan of up to 15cm (6"), it may be mistaken for a bat as it flies at night. It is usually flying between April and June.
Caterpillar food plants are blackthorn, ash, walnut, poplar, plum and apple. The caterpillar transforms through several instars of different colours and markings.
