In southwestern Ontario, Canada this beetle is commonly called the June bug for that is when it makes its appearance. It is a dark glossy brown, large, usually at least an inch and flies at night into the screens, attracted by house lights. In the morning they can be found dead beneath lights, windows and trees; mating presumably complete. It is a leaf eater, mostly trees and shrubs.

June bugs always swarmed around lights at night in my youth near Houston, and as children, we enjoyed playing with them. Now that I have my own garden and lawn in the Dallas area, I smush all that I find. The young grubs eat the roots of my lawn, and the grown-up beetles love to feast on the leaves of my strawberry plants at night.

This bug is very common in my backyard. It loves to hide under rocks, etc or a few inches in the soil. It seem to hate sun and only comes out at night. It look more like a reddish brown version of Japanese June bug. If you checked out the other websites, then you will see that it is destructive in both adult and larval form to many species of plants.
