Wild Cherry Sphinx Moth

Sphinx moths are not that common in my area and most feed upon wild shrubs and trees so don't present a problem from a gardeners point of view. This particular species feeds on cherry, apple and apparently lilacs. The caterpillars are solitary feeders. Within Newfoundland, Wild Cherry sphinx moth are only suppose to be in the extreme southwestern parts but this larvae was found near St. John's so they must now occur across the island. Most authorities claim they are not in Newfoundland at all but this proves otherwise!
