Soldier Fly

Yellow soldier fly also inhabits compost (like Black soldier fly). I see both around my compost this year.
Soldier flies are not pests, do not try to enter homes, do not sting or bite, and may be seen visiting flowers for nectar. The adults primarily just mate and females lay eggs on rotting, fermenting organic matter.
Soldier fly maggots eat voraciously and are it is said that their presence in waste will repel pest flies like house flies. With many soldier fly maggots in my compost, I see few fruit flies and no houseflies. Attract soldier flies to your compost with a bucketful of wet coffee grounds. Keep them happy with kitchen waste.
Soldier fly maggots are tan, have 'rings' , a pointy head end and a blunt tail end.
